’20 Piano Canons by Piano Comics’ for late beginners and elementary levels

Canon as a music form is one of the most effective and fun pieces you can teach in piano classes if you present them in a smart, fun way as a ‘chasing game’. It gives finger independence and advances listening skills since the student has to hear simultaneously the same melody 2 times. This also affects and improves their sense of rhythm. Young students love canons if you teach them as ‘chasing games’ just with lyrics in the beginning. ’20 Piano Canons by Piano Comics’+ 3 bonuses has 10 canons for late beginners and 10 for elementary levels all in 10 tonalities that use the same fingering in piano scales: c-major, g-major, d-major, a-major, e-major, a-minor, e-minor, d-minor, g-minor, c-minor.

The 10 canons for late beginners are all in one hand position with no finger turns and lasts 5-8 bars. The rest 10 canons for elementary levels have finger turns and jumps, lasts 8-13 bars and have more complex melody lines and rhythm. All lyrics rhyme with the melody that describe the humorous adventures of the 5 heroes-friends from Piano Comics. This part is of great significance because students want to repeat many times the funny stories and to re-live them.

Some more tips that I have used in my piano and music classes:

  1. Co-create lyrics with your students. The 3rd bonus includes 2 sets of new lyrics for the 10 canons for late beginners. Students are more eager to learn something they had their hands on building.
  2. Add a 3rd voice if there is another student in the class or a sibling. Create a chasing game just with words. No need to play on the piano all the time.
  3. ‘Chase’ while taking turns. Change the voices, who’s starting and who’s chasing. Try different time differences, instead of 1 bar wait 2 bars to start the canon. Make a goal of cmopleting 3-6 perfect rounds of a canon.
