Description
‘Pretty Lemon Tree’ is a traditional song of Epirus, in northwestern Greece, arranged for piano solo ( level: early intermediate ). The singing is optional and the lyrics were added to convey the character, atmosphere and style of the interpretation. The music of the region Epirus is beautifully peculiar with its pentatonic sound and dissonant intervals in the polyphonic singing forms ( ex. in the free sample, bar 14 to 24, the left hand is a second voice ‘singing’ in dissonant intervals).
Rhythmically, this song is quite heavy, ethereal and bucolic. You need to take your time expressing it. The ‘marriage’ between the folk music of Epirus and the Blues music is easily compatible and harmonically invigorating. The Blues rhythm add a fresh and unique look to a quite still traditional pulse and the uncanny intervals an enriched and ear-opening harmony (prelude and finale of the song).
The piano level is for elementary students but the added rhythmical patterns of Blues music ‘push’ it to intermediate levels.
Lyrics adapted into English by Michael Konstantinou-Rizos from the original Greek version.
